Malaria is one of the most infectious and common diseases that affects humans. According to WHO, the main reasons for the high incidence of malaria in Africa are the long life span and strong human-biting habits of mosquitoes. As a result of the high rate of malaria in Africa, I chose to work on this project to know how malaria has evolved in Africa as well as to demonstrate my ability to derive insight from a raw dataset. This dataset is gotten from Kaggle, The dataset consists of 595 rows and 26 columns. The columns consist of The country, Year, Code (The country code), Malaria (Incidence of malaria), Malaria case Reported, Bed-nets (Indicate then use of bet-nets), Antimalarial drugs (This describe the use of Antimalarial drugs), Preventive treatment of malaria, Safely water in urban, Safely water in Rural, People with water services in Urban, People with water services in Rural, Safely Sanitation services, People sanitation Urban, People sanitation Rural, Rural Population, Rural population growth, Urban population, Urban population growth, Basic water service in Rural, Basic services in Urban, Basic Sanitation in Rural, Basic sanitation services in Urban, Latitude, and Longitude. The dataset was downloaded in CSV (Comma Separated Values) format, and I converted it to excel format. I used the FIND and REPLACE in Excel to eliminate the special characters in it and then remove the duplicate data.
The dataset was then imported into the sequel (SQL). I used the SELECT DISTINCT command to determine the total number of unique countries. The dataset contains 54 unique African countries.
My goal for this analysis is to determine the total malaria reported in the Africa Region and the trend in each of the regions using SQL and Tableau to visualize it.
1.0 Malaria in East Africa
I used the SELECT statement, the SUM aggregate function to find the addition of all the malaria reports and the WHERE clause to filter out all the malaria reports summed in all the countries in East Africa. A total of 225736351 were reported in East Africa.
Also, I used the Select Statement to select all the malaria reports and the where conditions to filter out all the countries in East Africa. Uganda recorded the highest malaria with a total of 41126230 followed by Burundi with a total of 40249714, while Djibouti recorded the lowest malaria report with a total of 61,718 followed by Somalia with a total of 254342.
1.1 Malaria Trends in East Africa
I used the SELECT statement to select the year column and the SUM aggregate function to find the addition of all malaria reported, the WHERE statement to filter out all the countries in East Africa, and the GROUP BY command to group it according to each year, and the ORDER BY command to sort it by year.
The highest malaria was reported in 2017 and the lowest was reported in 2008. It was observed that there was a high malaria growth rate in 2012 to 2017.
2.0 Malaria in South Africa
A total of 109650309 were reported in South Africa.
The highest malaria report was recorded in Mozambique with a total of 43984158, followed by Angola with a total of 24034182, while the lowest was recorded in Botswana with a total of 8756 and South Africa with a total of 93089.
2.1 Malaria Trends in South Africa
The highest malaria was recorded in 2017 with a total of 24720669 and the lowest was recorded in 2008 with a total of 1540854. It was observed that the malaria growth rate increased exponentially from 2010 to 2017.
3.0 Malaria in North Africa
A total of 7265664 was recorded in North Africa.
The highest malaria reported was recorded in Sudan, with a total of 7265570, while the lowest was recorded in Egypt.
3.1 Malaria Trends in North Africa
The lowest malaria was reported in 2011 with a total of 506807, while the highest was recorded in 2014 with a total of 1068506.
4.0 Malaria in West Africa.
A total of 192531127 was recorded in North Africa.
Burkina Faso has the highest malaria report with a total of 41601963 followed by Nigeria with a total of 40066570, while Cape Verde has the lowest malaria report with a total of 699 followed by Mauritania with a total of 117335 in West Africa.
4.1 Malaria Trends in West Africa
The highest malaria was reported in 2017 and the lowest malaria was reported in 2007.
5.0 The Trend of Malaria in Africa
The lowest Malaria Report was recorded in 2008 with 9508374 while the highest was recorded in 2017 with 128146255.
6.0 Top ten country with Malaria Report
In Africa, the Republic of Congo has the highest malaria report with a total of 77555524. The second highest malaria report was recorded in Mozambique with a total of 43984158, the third in Burkina Faso with a total of 41601963, the fourth in Uganda with a total of 41126230, and the fifth in Burundi with a total of 40249714, followed by Nigeria with a total of 40066570, Ghana with a total of 28008309, Tanzania with a total of 24283088, Angola with a total of 24034182 and Malawi with a total of 19445640.
7.0 Conclusion
Malaria is highly prevalent in Africa. Over the decade (2007–2017), malaria grew from a total of 10102341 to 128146255. While West Africa has the highest growth rate of malaria, North Africa has the lowest malaria report.
The entire SQL code and Dashboard are on my GitHub Repository
This is good. However, in reporting the number of infections, use commas
This is really nice
